Winter Hiking in the Tirolean Lechtal

When winter time arrives in the Lechtal nature park region, then the landscape presents itself from its most beautiful side. Snow blankets cover the valley that is marked by the Lech river and the Alps like cotton wool. Nature holds its breath for a moment.

Around the "Last Wild" River

Winter and snowshoe hikers as well as ski mountaineers find now perfect conditions for contemplative hikes through the unspoilt landscape of the region. You're never far from the Lech river during all excursions and you can enjoy relaxing winter days off the beaten tracks of skiing tourism. On altogether 34 winter routes you can hike approx. 132 kilometres. The hikes bring you to the most beautiful destinations of the nature park region and invite to experience the wild river and the majestic mountains up close. During your winter hikes you will get to know the cultural and scenic gems and the impressive landscape along the banks of Europe’s last wild river.

Long panorama trails lead to power spots offering great views, such as the altitude settlement of Bircheltsgump in the quaint Bockbachtal, from where you can enjoy a view of the Hochalptal and the Krabachtal. You can also get to the quaint, small huts on the Bernhardseck, which are located at an altitude of more than 1,800m and which can be only reached by foot or mountaineering skis.

If you love peace and want to take deep breaths and enjoy the fantastic landscape of the region to the full, you should visit the lovely villages in the side-valleys: Hinterhornbach, Gramais, Bschlabs and Boden.

Far from civilisation, one can only get there from the nature park region during the winter months. On often hidden trails you can get into the heart of the Lechtal and Allgäu Alps.

Of course we’ve considered our youngest guests as well. On joint torch-light, lantern or animal track hikes you can explore the natural landscape and learn some regional history.  On hikes to pasture huts and the subsequent toboggan races downhill it gets really exciting. Also adults enjoy the magic of a tobogganing run in the winter.

Each of the 34 routes can be conquered in one day, so you have got plenty of time to recharge while walking and to consciously enjoy the overwhelming landscape! There are enchanting winter hiking trails for all types of hikers. There are mountaineering tours, leisure hikes and exciting and informative hikes.

Snowshoe Hiking in the Lechtal

There are different ways for leaving one’s tracks in the snow. Snowshoeing through the dreamlike winter landscape is an experience with a difference. Snow walking makes it possible to rediscover slowness and the rhythm of nature. This trend sport has been rediscovered and is especially suitable for experiencing our beautiful nature off the beaten tracks.

Our weekly events’ calendar offers guided snowshoe hikes. Trained mountain guides help with words and deeds and show you breath-taking nature highlights in the Lechtal. Ask for the dates of the hikes offered at the Lechtal tourist information offices.
