Towns in the Lech Valley The Tyrolean Lech Valley stretches from Forchach to Steeg. In between lies a landscape which is unique in Central Europe. The ideal area for holidays and for leaving behind the cares of everyday life.

The Lech Valley is named after the river Lech, the second largest river in Tyrol. Its sources are in the Vorarlberg area. It reaches Tyrol for the first time in Lechleiten, a little district of Steeg, at approx. 1270 metres above the sea level. It leaves Tyrol down in the valley after 65 kilometres flowing towards Donau. The Lech has a total length of 264 kilometres. The most impressive part of this river – and experts agree with it – is between Steeg and Forchach, i.e. in the Lech Valley. In these areas the Lech looks like a wild river, with extensive rubble benches and redeposition areas. The naturalness of the Lech is the reason why the river is officially safeguarded. The Lech Valley was namely included in the “Natura 2000“ project and became a Nature Reserve.
The Lech is not the only factor that makes the valley so unique. Also the many little tributary valleys (inhabited the whole year with only one exception) turn the valley into a unicum. The Lech Valley derives its original shape from the enormous glaciers that formed an impressive trough valley. Many parts are hardly accessible, but this a positive thing! In this way the valley can preserve its original character and primitiveness.
This mix of naturalness, quietness and tourist resources is what the visitors appreciate. Last but not least the natives’ hospitality. The programme activities are also very appealing. In the Lech Valley there are no large-scale skiing areas. They are rather little ski lifts, which are ideal for families and beginners. Experts can enjoy, on the other hand, a big skiing area in the near Warth. The Lech Valley is a paradise for all cross-country skiers and hikers. In summer many hiking paths lead you through the gorgeous mountain world and 48 alpine huts invite the visitors to have a break and stock up on new energy. 148 km well traced running and walking paths leave nothing to be desired. The Lech Valley hiking trails lead you through the landscape beauties of the region. In short: the Lech Valley is an oasis in our hectic time. And it will always be like that. |
