Lech Valley Nature Reserve Let’s discover the Lech Valley Nature Reserve!
An area of 41 square kilometres to be safeguarded – with good reason, as you will notice very soon.

The Tyrolese Lech Valley is - with its breathtaking natural beauties – one of the most beautiful natural places of the Alps. The remarkably few interferences makes the Valley so unique and valuable!
This natural and genuine territory has been included into the protection projects of the Europe-wide reserve net 2000. It has characteristical habitats and numerous and endangered species.
Since December 2004 the Tyrolese lech Valley is not only a Natura 2000 territory, but also a nature protection area with the official accredited title of “Nature Reserve“.
The Nature Reserve stretches across an area of approx 41km2 and a length of 62 km, from the town of Steeg to Vils along the south German border. The landscape is unique and untouched.
The wild river Lech characterizes the appearance of the Valley. Its ramified course and its wide, bordering floodplain landscape are the peculiarity of this reserve.
The alpine Lech wild river landscape lies between the Allgäu and Lech Valley Alps. It is of international importance thanks to its dimensions and shapes. With its natural vitality and free creative power, the Lech forms wide rubble and sand areas, that are subject to continuous changes.
The Lech and its floodplain groves are the last refuge for many plant and animal species, that were once widely spread in the wild river landscapes. The extraordinarily large number of species underlines the natural meaning of this territory.
In the Nature Reserve you can e.g. find botanic rarities such as the lady’s slipper orchids and the German tamarisk or zoological peculiarities such as the pink-winged grasshopper, the little ringed plover and the ”Bluatschink“ ...
The aim of the Nature Reserve is to safeguard the natural and cultural landscape and to conserve its variety and beauty. Beside these environmental projects, the Nature Reserve tries to give positive impulses in several areas, e.g. leisure, formation, research and regional development. Please contact the Nature Reserve team for further information and details.
